Programme's EC Day 2015 event: Sometimes life comes to solidarity

Sometimes life comes to solidarity

In the Syrian conflict’s fifth year, millions of refugees are caught in alarmingly deteriorating conditions, facing an even bleaker future, as a result of what is described as the largest humanitarian crisis since the 1994 Rwanda genocide. In recent months, nearly half a million people have attempted the dangerous journey to Europe, mainly via Greece and Italy, to escape from brutal wars and sectarian conflicts in places like Syria, Afghanistan and regions in Africa.

As Europe struggles to cope with the greatest number of displaced people since the 2nd World War, the Greek Managing Authority of European Territorial Cooperation Programmes and the “Greece - The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” IPA CBC Programme –as part of the EC DAY 2015 campaign- are collecting and donating drugs and medical supplies to support those refugees mostly in need of them.

Our act not only promotes the Programme’s social sensitivity, but also demonstrates the role Territorial Cooperation can play –as far as possible- in dealing with social challenges.

Greece - The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 2014-2020: New Programme adopted

People living in 5 border regions in Greece and 4 regions in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will benefit from a new EU supported cross border programme adopted today. The "Interreg IPA" programme, is worth more than EUR 45 million, with a contribution from the European Union of nearly EUR 39 million from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA).

It will help create jobs, improve public transport and healthcare as well as protecting the environment and the regions' natural heritage. The programme aims to create employment opportunities for educated graduates by exploiting the comparative advantages of the cross border area. Investments will support improved preventive health care and social services for children and the elderly population. The programme will also help the regions work together to promote tourism in the cross border area and creating new jobs in this sector. Investments will also be focused on upgrading public infrastructure to improve travel time. Environmental measures to be taken under the programme will support sustainable waste management as well as protecting ecosystems and biodiversity. The programme will also help to prevent, mitigate and manage the risk of natural disasters.

Corina Crețu, Commissioner for Regional Policy said:  "Our cross border programmes provide both concrete measures to improve the quality of life and offer new economic opportunities and jobs to people living in the border regions of the European Union and its neighbours. These programmes are an opportunity for regions to find common solutions to shared challenges."

The programme will focus on the following two priorities:

1. Development and Support of Local Economy;

2. Protection of Environment - Transportation.

Some expected results:

  • Improved cross border infrastructures (i.e. customs or other related to border safety and transport).
  • Information and communication systems related to transport aiming to support cross border accessibility and services.
  • Effective recycling and reuse of bio-wastes and joint operations for reduction of the volume of wastes.
  • Improved protection and sustainable management of protected areas, ecosystems and biodiversity in the crossborder area.
  • Restoration and rehabilitation of degraded soil and water resources.
  • Improvement on prevention, response and resilience to natural disasters and risks, especially forest fires, floods in order to minimise their impact on the natural and human environment.
